Kent cigarettes are an American cigarette brand that is currently owned by R. Tobacco Company. Kent cigarettes are manufactured and sold in the United States and by British American Tobacco in the rest of the world. This brand is named after Herbert Kent, former CEO of Lorillard Tobacco Company.
Initially, Kent cigarettes were cigarettes with excellent pure tobacco. However, from March 1952 until at least May 1956 the micronite filters on Kent cigarettes were included in delivery sets. In mid-1956, the Lorillard Company gradually changed the filter material for Kent cigarettes from asbestos to the more common cellulose acetate material. The Kent cigarettes brand continued its upward trend in sales until the late 1960s, after which it experienced a steady downward trend for a long time as more brands of filter cigarettes were introduced.
Kent cigarettes remained among the top 10 cigarette brands until 1979. In 1977, the Lorillard Company relinquished the rights to the Kent brand and other brands outside of the United States, and today all Kent cigarettes produced outside of this country are owned by the British American Tobacco Company. British American Tobacco purchased the Kent brand in the 1970s, began selling it outside the United States, and eventually made it one of its most popular brands, along with Dunhill, Lucky Strike, Pall Mall, and Rothmans. Kent cigarettes and other tobacco items in our range ensure unforgettable smoking pleasure. If you are in a hurry, you’re sure to find your favorite brand here at unbeatable prices.
What are Kent cigarettes?
Kent cigarettes, widely regarded by many as the first popular filter cigarettes, were introduced in 1952 by Lorillard Tobacco Company. At that time, a series of articles titled “Cancer from cartons” published by Reader’s Digest had caused many cigarette smokers to look for a filter cigarette when most existing brands did not have a filter. The Kent cigarettes brand was widely advertised with reference to its “Famous Micronit Filter” and promised its consumers the “greatest health protection ever”. The sales of Kent cigarettes rose rapidly during that period, and it is estimated that Lorillard sold about 13 billion Kent cigarettes in the first four years of Kent’s presence on the market.
